BodySense Comes to the Kitchener- Waterloo Region – Predators Primary Volleyball Sponsor |
“The main goal of bringing BodySense to the KW Predators and the Waterloo Region was to raise awareness of our athlete’s self body image, positive self-esteem, the FACTS about nutrition.” said Stephen Green, Head Coach of the 13U Girls team and strong advocate of the BodySense program. On Saturday October 27th and Tuesday October 30th, the 13U, 14U, 15U and 16U athletes, parents, and coaches of KW Predators, participated in the BodySense workshops facilitated by former York University volleyball standout Heather Harrison who is the Program coordinator. The athletes were treated to a one hour session that included activities that had them think about how they view themselves, how others view them, and the facts about proper nutrition and how it affects them both as athletes and people. The parents and coaches also had their own one hour session where they received the facts about natural athlete body size, warning signs of disordered eating, what resources were available to them, and how to foster a sport environment that promotes positive body image. “BodySense is happy to be working with the Predators Volleyball Club in its debut presentation to the Kitchener/Waterloo area!” said Harrison. “Why is this information important? Because there can be a lot of pressure in sport for athletes to look and be a certain way. If an athlete is not aware of tools to combat these pressures it can lead to sport compromising behavior. BodySense is an innovative and PROACTIVE way to help our athletes gain this knowledge AND help our coaches and parents perpetuate the knowledge on a daily basis - everybody wins!” Green went on to say, “More often than not, elite athletes do not have the facts about healthy eating and positive self body-image. BodySense provides the education component to help athletes understand disordered eating and be aware.” Complementary, in-club workshops are available to all Ontario clubs until January 30th, 2008.
